Montgomery, Texas

Rich History

Montgomery Texas is one of Texas’ oldest municipalities in the state and the birthplace of the Texas Flag! The city was known as Lake Creek Settlement and Montgomery Settlement before it was incorporated in 1837. Montgomery began as a stagecoach and telegraph hub for a broad farmland area. Its first school opened in 1839, and it incorporated in 1848. And, during the building boom in the 1850s, some excellent residences erected then still stand today, occupied by relatives of original owners or early owners.

The Lone Star Flag, with its bright red, white, and blue colors and a single 5-point star insert, has been a proud symbol of Texas. Amazingly, the Texas Flag was designed by Montgomery native Dr. Charles Bellinger Stewart at the request of President Mirabeau B. Lamar. With grandeur, the Lone Star Flag has flown on flagpoles across Texas since 1839. A copy of Dr. Stewart’s original drawing, signed by President Lamar, is at Austin’s State Archives. Our N.H. Davis Pioneer Complex & Museum has the original drawing. Dr. Stewart is interred in the Old Methodist Church Cemetery, also known as the Old Montgomery Cemetery.

On May 30, 1997, the 75th Texas Legislature designated Montgomery County as the birthplace of the Lone Star Flag.

Things To Do

Fernland Historical Park Montgomery TXFernland Historical Park

The amazing structures of Fernland Historical Park represent early Texas frontier architecture. This is just one of four amazing parks in the city. Fernland Historical Park is dedicated to showing and preserving buildings constructed prior to and following the Civil War. You will love this place because this park is both a museum and an education center, which will enrich the lives of city residents and teach the public.

Cedar Brake Park

Cedar Brake Park is a public space situated in downtown Montgomery at around 5 acres in size. This is well-equipped for children, teenagers, and older adults, as it provides lots of recreational activities. In the park’s honor, the name derives from a group of 100-year-old cedar trees that inhabit the grounds.

Lake Creek Settlement Historical MarkerHome to Many Historical Markers

Join a guided tour to get an in-depth look at Fernland Park and the N. H. Davis Museum. While you are in the museum, be sure to grab the brochure Historic Montgomery, which provides a guide to the city’s 37 historical landmarks.

Places to Eat

Pizza Shack – Serving the best pizza in the area, you’ll want to check out Pizza Shack! With and east-cost style of pizza, the Simmons family does it right! They have a full menu of pizza, Italian dishes, and a full bar. You cannot go wrong with Pizza Shack!

Eatery at Hodge Podge Lodge – fine dining at its best with a historical flare! Hodge Podge Lodge offers seasonal dishes and they host events as well. Built for the Willis family in 1854, in honor of Richard S. Willis. The name “Melrose” is a reference to a Scottish estate owned by his ancestors, and Hodge Podge Lodge had previously been named in its honor. A four-room, story-and-a-half house with a detached kitchen was built as the home’s first room. In the library, formal dining room, and parlor, one can see a very wide plank floor which was left as a reminder of the original house’s footprint. People of all ages, especially teens, gathered here to have fun, and often organized picnics or family reunions on the town’s wide lawn during the civil war era.

Cozy Grape – Elegant dining in a cozy atmosphere with exceptional service provided by the wait staff. The Chef has worked at Cozy Grape for over 6 years and can prepare anything from sandwiches to steaks for our customers.

Phil’s Roadhouse – The place to go for ribs and rib-eyes, catfish, and burgers in the area. In addition, beer, wine, and margaritas are available.

Ransom’s Steakhouse – Full-service restaurant with a family-friendly atmosphere that specializes in steaks and other traditional Texas fare. Every Friday and Saturday, there is live acoustic music, as well as a full bar.

Whitley Winery – At Whitley Vineyards, we are driven by a passion for fine wine and friendship. Bringing you high-quality Texas wines to enjoy on any occasion is our mission.

Yo Mama’s BBQ – Texas BBQ cooked over post oak and in a wood fire until the meat is tender and falling off the bone. Yes, that is correct, everyone. “No need teeth to eat my beef,” Kelvin explains.
